Ernest Moret, a foreign rights manager for the French publishing house La Fabrique, boarded a train in Paris bound for London in early April. He was on his way to attend the London Book Fair. When Moret arrived at St. Pancras station in the United Kingdom, two plainclothes cops who apparently said they were “counter-terrorist police” proceeded to terrorize Monet. They interrogated him for six hours, asking everything from his views on pension reform to wanting him to name “anti-government” authors his company had published, according to the publisher, before proceeding to arrest him for refusing to give up the passwords to his phone and laptop. Following his arrest, Moret was released on bail, though his devices were not returned to him.The case, while certainly showcasing the United Kingdom’s terrifying anti-terror legislation, also highlights the crucial importance of taking operational security seriously when traveling — even when going on seemingly innocuous trips like a two-and-...Minnesota woman who left newborn to die sentenced to prison

REDWING, Minn. (AP) — A Minnesota woman who admitted to leaving her newborn son to die near the Mississippi River two decades ago has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.Jennifer Matter, of Belvidere Township outside Red Wing, was sentenced Friday for second-degree murder, KARE-TV reported. She pleaded guilty in January to leaving the baby on the banks of the river in 2003. She was not arrested until May 10, 2022, after DNA evidence tied her to the boy, authorities said.Prosecutors have said the DNA evidence also links Matter to a baby girl found dead by the Mississippi in 1999 but she has not been charged in that case. According to the criminal complaint, Matter said she hoped someone would find the baby boy alive after she left him. Teenagers found the child’s body on Dec. 7, 2003, in Frontenac on the shore of Lake Pepin, a body of water on the Mississippi River. SourceRams draft Georgia QB Stetson Bennett in 4th round

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Stetson Bennett will get a chance to deliver for the Los Angeles Rams.Georgia’s two-time national championship-winning quarterback was selected by the Rams in the fourth round of the NFL draft on Saturday, uniting him with coach Sean McVay and fellow former Georgia signal-caller Matthew Stafford on the West Coast. The 25-year-old Bennett’s unlikely route from junior college to the pinnacle of collegiate success has been well documented, but the NFL worthiness of the quirky quarterback known as “The Mailman” has been hotly debated for years. The Rams clearly believe in the 5-foot-11 passer with a knack for winning and making big throws in big games, even if his measurable talents don’t match other prospects.Bennett is the first quarterback drafted by the Rams since McVay became their head coach in 2017. He will join Stafford, the Super Bowl winner who is under contract for the next four seasons.Los Angeles hadn’t drafted a quarterback since t...DC council member wants to add $2 rideshare surcharge for some downtown trips

A D.C. council member is advocating to include a $2 surcharge on rideshare trips, hoping to encourage more people to use public transit and decrease traffic congestion.Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau is leading the effort to get the plan included in the District’s upcoming budget. She says the plan would help revitalize downtown D.C. by prioritizing public transit while also reducing pollution and noise. That fee would be added to rides to downtown and nearby neighborhoods from 7 a.m. to noon, and then to trips out of those same areas from noon to 7 p.m., seven days a week.“This will generate about $10 million in the first year, which will only cover the overnight bus,” Nadeau said, referring to the 24-hour bus service on at least 12 of D.C.’s busiest lines that the surcharge revenue would fund.Mayor Muriel Bowser called the plan a “terrible idea,” saying it would hurt efforts to reenergize downtown D.C.“Actually charging people to come d...Latest news
