ST. CHARLES, Mo. - A small, but popular locally-owned movie theater in St. Charles is planning to reopen soon, several years after a devastating fire and COVID-19 delays. The St. Andrews Cinema has shared a series of Facebook posts this week indicating that it expects to reopen, possibly as soon as 2023. Organizers have not yet announced a potential reopening date. Top Story: Witness: Woman pumping gas seriously hurt chasing after stolen purse The cinema has drawn large crowds for decades, oftentimes offering $1 shows for movies that just left large theater chains. In late 2019, a fire caused significant damage to the building, and it would require significant repairs before staff could consider reopening the site. According to a Facebook post Thursday, the current plan is to reopen St. Andrews Cinema "as an operable, community-centered movie theatre with a sizable emphasis on live events, outdoor attractions, special programming, and rentals." Organizers say the building still ne...

EXPLAINER: What might Colorado River cuts mean for states?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:10:49 GMT

By SUMAN NAISHADHAM (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration floated two ideas this week to reduce water usage from the dwindling Colorado River, which supplies 40 million people. The 1,450-mile (2,334-kilometer) river is a lifeline for seven U.S. states, dozens of Native American tribes, and two states in Mexico. It irrigates nearly 5.5 million acres (about 2.2 million hectares) of farmland in the U.S. and Mexico and generates hydroelectric power used across the West. In recent decades, drought, climate change and an imbalance between the river’s flows and how much water users are promised has forced federal officials to consider new steps.Tuesday’s analysis from the Interior Department considers two ways to force cuts in the water supply for Arizona, Nevada and California: use the existing water priority system or the same percentage across the board. California and some tribes with senior rights to water benefit more under the first option. A...

Calls for Feinstein to resign elicit accusations of double standard for women

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:10:49 GMT

Critics are highlighting what they say is a double standard against Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) as she faces calls to resign from her post over her health. Democratic Reps. Ro Khanna (Calif.) and Dean Phillips (Minn.) called on Feinstein, 89, to step down on Wednesday over her prolonged absence from the upper chamber due to her health. The calls come as other male senators, including John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have taken leaves of absence for health-related issues in recent months. On Wednesday, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) pointed to absences from male lawmakers, suggesting there was a double standard at play. “It’s interesting to me. I don’t know what political agendas are at work that are going after Sen. Feinstein in that way. I’ve never seen them go after a man who was sick in the Senate in that way,” Pelosi told reporters, whose comments came shortly before Khanna called on Feinstein to step down.Other...
